Manufacturers have four different options for coloring plastic. Each method of coloring plastic is different, and so the four should not be used interchangeably. Deciding on your specific coloring method can be difficult, and so our team is here to help you steer through this confusing world of plastic coloring.
Of the four types, the masterbatch method is the most frequently used. Masterbatch is a colored material that has a high pigment content. Masterbatch is mixed with plastic resins to make final pieces. Masterbatch is easy to handle and can achieve unique and specific colors. It is almost exclusively used when coloring black or dark grey. The type of pigment that is being used determines color matching, and so at times, color matching can be tricky.
The compounding method makes colored pellets by mixing pigment and pellets that are naturally colored. Once together, they are extruded into the mixture. Compounding allows for the highest consistency with color matching when compared to the other methods. This exact color matching comes at a cost.
Using surface coating w/pigment is a quick and inexpensive way to get colored pellets. Saving money with this coloring method will lessen the pigment’s dispersion rate.
Dry blending mixes pellets and pigments just before molding. It is hard to handle and requires cleaning, so it considered the most troublesome method of coloring.
