Protecting Devices from Fire

Specialty compounds exist to enhance the overall perform of a plastic product. These compounds change the characteristics of the plastic, and so in some cases, the specialty compound is not even seen. One example of that is a flame retardant compound. A good deal of thermoplastics are flammable, and so they can easily burn (at high temperatures). These compounds are essential for the safe function a good deal of modern day technology. Flame retardant polymers can help to minimize the damage to devices and people when overheating is a potential issue.

Flame retardant compounds meet both UL and ASTM, and they contribute to preventing fires from forming as well as spreading. Although all these compounds are designed to fight fires, different types have different characteristics. Three of the traditional versions include:

Non-halogenated flame-retardants polymers generate water while decomposing. This can both cool heated items and put out fires.

The halogenated version is based on bromine, which helps to cut off oxygen supplies (fire needs oxygen to burn). As the plastic deconstructs, bromine is released.

Lastly, there is the intumescent chemistries type. As this type decomposes, it chars, which separates the fire from non-burnt materials.

For more information on flame retardant polymers, reach out for more details from a local plastic compounding supplier.
